Check this site for a good overview of
the consideration of breeding:
Breeding & Whelping (Chinaroad Lowchens/Australia)
|
Health Checks |
A pre-breeding
examination should include a heart check, intestinal parasite,
heartworm and tick disease check. Before breeding, both
dogs should have their hips checked for dysplasia and eyes
checked for any issues. Certificates from CERF for the eyes
and OFA certificate for the hips can be obtained on clear
dogs. In addition, having the elbows and a thyroid
screen done is recommended, and OFA certificates can also be
obtained for those tests with normal results. |

Pregnancy |
I will refer you
to Chinaroad Lowchins. Excellent site and good information on
pregnancy and what to expect. Check out their link here
Canine Pregnancy. It covers from the number of days of
gestation, things to look for when the time is near, when to
increase their food intake, and so much more. |

Whelping |
To see topics like
The Whelping List, Whelping Management, A Whelping
Guide, Problems With Whelping, Canine C-Section, and so many
more specific to whelping, the good and the bad, go to
Breeding & Whelping. This site has compiled a
comprehensive list of sites all over the internet. |
|
Care of Pups |
There are ups and
downs to caring for a new litter. Newborns are very fragile
and so many things can happen. One of the most comprehensive
sites with a compilation of links to information all over the
internet can be found at
Newborns - Problems and Care. The links found here cover
from basic care to life-threatening issues, which can affect
not only the newborn, but also the mother. |
